Introduction to IMAM UK-Eire Medical Symposium 2012

The IMAM Medical Symposium is a medical-themed congress that has been an annual tradition for Islamic Medical Association of Malaysia (IMAM). IMAM was established in 1989 and recognized as one of the largest professional medical organisations in Malaysia. Its members are comprised of medical professionals and medical students who carry out voluntary work outside the confines of the government and private sectors. IMAM is also an active member of the Federation of Islamic Medical Associations (FIMA).

The IMAM Medical Symposium 2012 will be the ninth symposium following eight successful symposiums in Dublin Hilton Hotel (2004), Manchester Royal Infirmary Center (2005, 2007), Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (2006, 2008), Hebden Hey Scout Centre, West Yorkshire (2009), Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin (2010), and Manchester University (2011). The symposiums have maintained a good rapport with the Malaysian government and have been officiated by some of Malaysia’s most prominent figures such as the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak, and the former Director-General of Health, Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Hj. Mohd. Ismail bin Merican.

The theme this year will adopt the phrase ‘Doctors beyond the Horizon’ to reflect the idea of becoming medical practitioners who contribute to society beyond their work scope. This 3-day symposium will introduce and emphasize to participants the value of making changes for the betterment of society’s healthcare through manpower and brainpower as well as to address the importance of being involved in voluntary work whilst juggling their current or future medical career. This is parallel to the country’s mission to breed professionals who are accomplished and capable of contributing to society.

IMAM Eire Medical Symposium: Aims & Objectives

Medical professionals have the greatest potential to aid society in various ways other than by just working within the confines of a hospital or clinic. IMAM Medical Symposium 2012 will highlight multiple routes that are accessible to doctors and students to channel their profession and make an eminent difference in the lives of those they come in contact with. Other than that, this event will encourage those in the medical field who have a budding interest to make a bigger difference in society and support them by providing the requisite knowledge in relation to voluntary work. This time around, the objectives of the IMAM Medical Symposium have been formed based on these conjectures. The formulated objectives are:

  • To sow seeds of interest within participants, both practicing and aspiring doctors, to become involved in voluntary work within the line of medicine through participation in NGOs, research or other forms of voluntary work.
  • To provide a platform for participants to access means of becoming involved in voluntary work and to effect positive changes in society, be it in the form of manpower or brainpower.
  • To provide information to the participants about the concept and importance of voluntary work and how it makes a difference to the society.
  • To gather like-minded people who share the same interest and give them the opportunity to express their views and share their experiences on voluntary work outside their work scope as well as to encourage interaction amongst participants.
  • To accentuate the importance of building solid characteristics of an ideal doctor through involvement in voluntary work.
